Film poster analysis - Kathryn Davies

For my analysis of a film poster, I have chosen to analyse the poster for "Se7en". I chose this poster as it is relevant to our project, being a thriller. I got this poster from http://www.impawards.com/1995/seven_ver1.html

The denotation of the poster is a close-up of two men, separated by text, with a sepia tone to it.
The sepia tone suggests perhaps it is set in a different time period, or alternately could suggest it's  detective film. The close-up of the men suggests that they are the main characters, and being a close-up, it shows the strain on their faces. Although it is difficult to tell, they appear to be wearing formal clothes, suggesting that they are middle-class, or again could suggest that they are detectives.

The text at the top of the page shows the actors names. The correct name is above each actor to show anyone who sees the poster who is in the film. The text is easy to read and quite large, showing that these actors are famous, and are a reason to go watch the film. The text is white to help it stand out from the poster too.

The text between the two actors are the names of the seven deadly sins. This suggests that the seven deadly sins are an integral part of the plot, and also fit in with the name of the film. Each of the sins also have a red line through them at a cantered angle. This suggests that they are being crossed off a list. The red suggests danger and perhaps blood.

The name of the film is in a different font to the rest of the text on the poster, making it stand out as it is the most important part of the poster. The text looks quite like handwriting, which could link in with the idea of a list. It is also white, again enforcing that this is an important part of the poster. It is placed towards the bottom of the poster, meaning that it is one of the last things that you see, helping the title stick in the audience's minds.

At the bottom of the poster, there is a list of people who have worked on the film, giving them credit. The font is quite small, showing that this isn't a main feature in persuading an audience to see the film.

One problem with the poster is that is doesn't contain an age certificate. This is a feature of most film posters, although it may have been missed out to generate more interest in the film, and make people wonder what it's about, an what kind of content is shown in the film.

After analysing this poster, I have seen some features that I could use in my film poster, and also have spotted places where I could improve.
