Short Film Analysis

Before our media project is started i have desided as research to look in the elements, shots and charaters of another thriller short film. To do this i have deside to anaylse a short film

The film is called Twisted click here for the link

The film begins with a shot of a black screen, after a second or two the sound of a violin/cello and chimes begins the music is quite and is meant to create suspense and a creepy atmosphere. The music create this atmosphere as the chimes go for high pitched and low pitch with no really with no really relatable pattern, the audience cannot predict the music. This puts the audience on edge and is often used in horror and thriller films.

The music and the screen being black for a few seconds gives suspense to the viewer. This is because a black screen could lead the audience to think of darkness and it also could represent to them danger. As the music is playing white text fades in onto the centre of the screen the writing says ‘TWISTED’. The music them gets quieter as the title fades off the screen to leave behind another blank screen and silence for a few seconds. The screen then fades to a long shot of a women dressed in black reading. The shot is static and stays like that for a few seconds as the women flicks through the pages of the book. The women’s face is covered by her hair this makes the audience interested in the women as it means they want to know who she is at the moment she is a women of mystery to them. The shot is in black and white, this could represent many things to the audience. It could be to represent that the film is in the style of old black and white films, however this is unlikely as the style of clothing the women is wearing is very modern. It could be to make the audience think something back has happened or is going to. This is because the colour black represents danger or darkness. The black and white effect may just be to create a gloomy dim atmosphere to the film. Behind the women is a footpath with trees the trees are completely static and almost looks like it is a backdrop. The shot seems to have been composed to look like a perfect scene, this may be to straight away show the audience something isn’t quite right and give them a ‘this is almost to perfect...’ feeling. The chimes start again as this shot begins.

The shot then cuts to a long, eye level shot of a car pulling up in a car. This shot cuts to a close up of the drivers face through the car window. As this shit begins the music gets more coarse and louder, this is to show the audience that the man in the car is important to the film, this is also shown to the audience because the actor is wearing a suit. There is the a shot reverse shot between the faces of the man and the women, this is to show the reactions of the two people as they see each other. The shots are both eye level so besides the girl looking scared or disgusted at the man they are both still equal. The shot the cuts to an over the shoulder shot from the women’s shoulder as the man gets out of the car. At this point the chimes in the music get much more frequent. There is then a medium shot of the man as the stands and leans against the car he folds his arms, this is a defensive position and shows the audience he’s someone that’s defensive.

It then cuts to a shot of the women as she stands and walks away. It then cuts to a close up shot of the man as he sees the women stand and walks and begins to follow her. It cuts back to a medium, eye level shot from the side of the girls, it tracks her starts to walk faster and looks back to see if the man is behind her. This shows the audience she is panicked. When is shot begins the music becomes fare more intense and more course. The shots cuts to a similar shot of the man behind her as he gains on her. There is a shot reverse shot between these shots to show the reactions of the actors. It then cuts to a long shot of the two actors. This is most likely to show how close the man was to the women at that point. It then cuts to a over the should shot to show the women as the man touch’s her shoulder. The women turns to realeve to the man she was a monster. The is then a close up shot of the man to show his reaction to this an then it quickly cuts back to a medium shot of the women. The shot then cuts back to a black screen and the credit roll.
