Name: Scarlett Morose
Age: 17
Ethnic origin: White British
Character features: Sees herself as three different people; her manic self who is confident, immature, aggressive, elated and disorganised. Her depressed self, who is isolated, worthless, guilty and unhappy. And her well or ‘normal’ self who is insecure, confused and placid. She is highly intelligent.
Role within the film: The main character who’s life we see unfold and her condition ultimately leads to the murder of her counsellor.
Physical appearance:
During Mania:
· Flamboyant
· Disorganised in the way she dresses
· Altered clothes, i.e. twisted hemming
During Depression:
· Dark coloured
· Simple
· Non-ostentatious
She also has short brown hair that can be messed up and neatened according to her disposition. Petite as she is only a child.

Age: 38
Ethnic origin: White British
Character features: Benevolent, calming, understanding and insightful, Beryl is a content character. She is a traditional type of counsellor who just wishes to help. She is extremely intelligent.
Physical appearance: She is attractive and smartly dressed. She has long loose hair which insinuates her connection to nature and her love of free-spirit.
Role within the film: She plays the counsellor, simply wanting to aid Scarlett in the resolution of her difficulties. However, she is murdered by Scarlett and in confusion, Scarlett believes Beryl is a clown. She is a pivotal character as she causes Scarlett to cross the line between reality and the surreal.

Name: Jester The Clown
Character features: Sadistic, machevellian and enigmatic. Has psychopathic tendencies.
Physical appearance: Flamboyant clothing, traditional clown costume except the outfit is altered to match the unusual mind-set of Jester and also to emulate the clothing of the protagonist (highlighting he is part of her subconcious).
Role within the film: acts as a catalyst in Scarlett crossing the boundaries between the real and surreal. Taunts Scarlett into behaving beadly and plays on her insecurities. Embodies the sadistic side to Scarlett’s character.
